The history of major engineering accomplishments is replete with examples of graphical communications: from styli etchings on clay tablets to near-recent blueprint drawings. Graphics has always been a requisite form of communication for engineering practice. The second aim of this paper is to review three of these areas, working memory, imagery reinterpretation and mental synthesis, and to examine their implications for design research generally but with a particular emphasis on the role of sketching in design. This work provides theoretical frameworks, experimental methodologies and a considerable body of research results that are of great potential importance to design research. Recently, however, researchers in the design area have begun to relate their work to a number of areas of research in cognitive psychology and cognitive science. The first aim of this paper is to collect together and review the results of this research and to relate it to similar research that has looked at the role of drawings in problem solving in other disciplines. Because of this emphasis researchers have also begun to focus on the sketch and its role in design. Designers place great emphasis on the sketch often because it is thought to be associated with innovation and creativity. The different types of drawings are associated, with different stages of the process with one type, the relatively unstructured and ambiguous sketch, occurring early in the process.

While this tutorial is not meant to teach all aspects of the program, it has been shown to be effective at teaching people with no Illustrator background how to create a simple but useful design that could function in the scope of 2.009.Ī characteristic of the design process in all areas of design is the use of a number of different types of drawings. They reported that the tutorial gave them enough knowledge of the program to then experiment on their own to continue learning Illustrator. Both of these subjects were able to learn the basics of Illustrator and create a simple logo design in under two hours.

The subjects had no previous experience with the program. A study was conducted on two subjects to judge the effectiveness of the website tutorial project at teaching how to use Illustrator. The project conducted as this thesis was to create a website tutorial to teach students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology enrolled in 2.009, the senior capstone product design course, the basics of Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator is a valuable tool for an engineer to make professional-looking presentation drawings. Sketching by hand is important in the creative process because it promotes reinterpretation through ambiguity.
